Our Graduates

Maryam Parvizian
Bachelor of Information Systems Mid 2004
Job title: Senior Consultant
Company: IBM

What do I do?
I currently work in the Consulting field, on different client projects within IBM’s Global Business Services arm. My diverse roles have exposed me to various IT sectors, skills and countries- allowing me to strengthen my knowledge base. Experiencing various phases of the SDLC further coupled with team leadership, client liaison and management activities, my IT skills combine daily to deliver services and solutions dedicated to our clients and their success. The technical knowledge I acquired during my uni years gave me the basic fundamentals that I build on daily, building my experience base with further exposure.

How does my degree help?
Bachelor of Information Systems enabled the collaboration of my people & communication skills via projects, public speaking and presentations with the technical aspects of the job. Teamwork, technical knowledge, business understanding and industry experience prepared me for the corporate world. I learnt how IT aligns in the business world- being not all technical but more how technology is used in organisations to enhance goals, increase productivity and meet customer needs.

What's next?
My goal is to strengthen core management skills and build on my global delivery experience during my time with an organisation. I would like to advance my career and broaden future employment options by exposing myself to the various corporate sectors. Consulting is currently interesting and over the next few years I plan to specialise in my chosen business field by advancing my skills and experience.

Li Leng Tay
Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Information Systems 2004
Company: Accenture
Job title: Consultant

What do I do?
I am a Consultant with a large IT and Business Consulting company, attached to the Malaysian office. As a Consultant, I have worked in several roles across the delivery lifecycle of a typical IT implementation project. I have been seconded to the Melbourne office to work in a large Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Billing system implementation project. During my time on this project, I had worked in several interesting roles, one of which involved managing a testing phase across several releases. This involved planning, managing and coordinating a team of 25 onshore and offshore (in India) team members. I am currently in a Product Architecture role which requires me to engage directly with the client to understand all aspects of their products and services. From this we assess possible solution options while considering the end-to-end impacts of each to produce a high level design that will adequately support their business requirements.

How does my degree help?
Through a combination of both my Commerce and Information Systems degrees, I am able to understand and appreciate how businesses operate, how to read the financial reports, and how IT and business process re-organisation can assist a company to achieve its objectives in a streamlined, efficient and effective manner. Furthermore, the technical knowledge and real life work / industrial experience gained during my IS degree assists me in quickly adapting to the continually changing technical landscape, and tackle the learning curve of each new role I take on. The IS course also gave me valuable experiences in team work, leading and planning timelines of projects, public speaking and presentations. Both degrees have given me a solid foundation to continually build on to take on any new role required of an IT Consultant, in a flexible and equipped manner.

What's next?
The Consulting service line is a very interesting and diverse organisation where one can always be presented with opportunities to travel around the world to work in various industries and be part of different project initiatives. I hope to develop my business and technical knowledge while specialising within the design and delivery of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications.
